How are materials tested and how is the characteristic value used in design

A
  • A range of values is obtained as no material is completely homogenous
  • The value taken during design period is the characteristic value that no more than 5% of that material will fall below
  • This does mean some material will have a lower strength than required and therefore a safety factor has to be taken into account. If the material is thought to be completely uniform then the safety factor will be near 1
