What duty does the employer have?
To ensure so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.
Who polices the Act?
The HSE
What is the consequence of failing to abide by the Act?
Fines and/or imprisonment
What must be reported per the 1995 regulations?
Injuries and dangerous occurrences
What do the 1999 Regulations state must be undertaken, recorded and regularly reviewed?
A Risk Assessment
What does a hazard refer to?
Anything that could cause harm e.g. wet floor
What is the possibility that someone could be harmed?
A risk e.g. falling over on a wet floor
Where should detailed HSE information be held?
On site, usually in the Operations and Maintenance Manual
When is it a legal requirement for organisations to carry out documented health and safety risk assessments of all their significant hazards?
When they employ more than 5 staff
What are the 5 steps within the HSE’s 5 step approach to risk assessments?
- Identify hazards present.
- Identify people at risk.
- Evaluate risk, taking into account likelihood and severity of any accidents. Identify and evaluate existing controls
- Record findings.
- Review regularly.
What is a method statement?
A document that details the way a work task or process is to be completed.
What should a method statement outline?
Hazards involved.
What should the method statement guide on?
How to do the job safely.
What else must be detailed within a method statement?
Control measures introduced to ensure safety of anon affected by the task/process.
What must a written Health and Safety policy document contain?
- Policy setting out commitment to H&S.
- Details of H&S structure, roles and responsibilities.
- A risk assessment.
- Details of planning, implementation of the H&S policy and control measures.
