How to safely visit premises?
- tell someone where you are going and let them know when you leave too
- wear appropriate clothing EG high visibility jacket, hard hat, goggles, gloves and ear defenders (PPE)
- sign in and out of construction site
- have site induction
- check if safe to work alone
- check dated tag on scaffolding
- wear non slip shoes if going on ladder
Health and Safety at Work 1974
- duty to all employers to ensure health safety and welfare of employees
- policed by HSE (Health and Safety Executive) - can issue fines/prison
- only UK Act where guilty until proven innocent
Hazard
Anything that has potential to cause harm
EG wet floor
Risk
Likelihood/probability that someone will be harmed
EG risk of falling on wet floor
Risk Assessment
- legal requirement for organisations of more than 5 staff
- need risk assessments for all significant hazards
- Identify hazards
- Identify those at risk
- Evaluate risk / likelihood of accident
- Record findings
- Review risk assessment regularly
- Advise those affected of risk assessment and methods of work to minimise risk
Method Statement
- details how task is to be completed
- must detail control measures in place
- needs prior approval
Health and Safety policy document
- required for employers if more than 5 employees
- written document with 4 points:
1. Policy of commitment to H&S
2. Details on roles and responsibilities
3. Risk assessment
4. Details of control measures

RIDDOR
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
- report if over 7 days incapacitation
- report to HSE within 15 days
- keep record if injury over 3 days
- maintain accident book for 3 years after incident
Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homocide Act 2007
- breach of duty of care that leads to persons death
- penalty range from unlimited fine, imprisonment, or disqualification of company director
Fire Risk Management Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- applies to non domestic property in England and Wales
- ‘Responsible Person’ is employer/occupier/owner who controls property
- need fire risk assessment, procedures and staff training and regular reviews
