When a horse or pony is lame in a front leg, how do you know which leg it is lame on?
it will dip its noes down. it will lift its head up when it puts pressure on the lame leg
What do you see when a horse or pony is lame behind?
the horse will drop its hip slightly.
Have you ever noticed signs of illness in your horse or pony?
yes, will look sad, ears back constantly, looking at its stomach, loss of weight, not eating or drinking, coat and condition, droppings / texture of it
What could make you suspect a horse or pony that is turned out in the field is ill?
there is no dropping in the field, laid down looking at its stomach, not acting normal, not eating at all
How can you tell if a horse or pony is in poor condition?
not eating, change in behavior, not drinking, diahourera, their coat and weight
Can you give me two causes of poor condition?
Chronic diseases – virtually every chronic disease will result in poor feed efficiency and some loss of body condition. not enough food being given
Can you tell me what problems would make you call the vet?
when there is blood pouring out, horse is showing signs of colic, can not walk, is not eating
Are any injuries more likely to need the vet?
is the horse has a big thick cut with a lot of blood coming out
Can you name any illnesses that will probably need the vet?
colic, laminitis
You have decided that a cut needs the vet’s attention, how are you going to look after the
cut until the vet arrives?
apply pressure to stop the blood from coming out, hose it down with cold water.
