21
Q

What do decay fungi cause?

What trees are susceptible to stem decay?

How is it managed?

How is it transmitted?

A

Causes heart rots.

most mature conifers in BC are susceptible

Very difficult to manage other than cutting premature forests. Cause lots of economic damage

Transmitted by windborne basidospores from fruiting bodies, some by root contact.

22
Q

Describe hosts of stem decay

How do you ID stem decay

Damage description

A

some decay are species specific, some attack wide range of species.

Attack dead standing and downed trees

Attack heartwood via scars/other damage/via dead branch stubs

ID: conks, staining of wood, advanced decay(crumby/stringy)

Damage: most are obligate saprophytes.

29
Q

Woodborers:

host, ID, Damage

A

Hosts: windthrow, felled trees, weakened trees-all species

ID: Snake-like larval galleries under bark end at entrance hole into sapwood;

Adult exit holes on outside of bole-size is species dependent

Main galleries with grain

Damage: affect grade and value of lumber, weakened trees can be killed
