Health Flashcards
What is hypoxia?
Insufficient supply of oxygen to the body cells
What are the four types of hypoxia?
Hypoxic hypoxia
Hypemic hypoxia
Histotoxic hypoxia
Stagnant hypoxia
What is hypoxic hypoxia?
Insufficient supply of oxygen to the body as a whole. O2 molecules cannot pass through the respiratory system’s membranes
What is hypemic hypoxia?
Inability of the blood to carry O2 molecules. Can be cause by insufficient blood, anemia, or CO poisoning
What is histotoxic hypoxia?
Inability of the body’s cells to affectively use the O2 carried by the blood. This can be caused by drugs or alcohol
What is stagnant hypoxia?
Caused by the blood not flowing to a body tissue. Can be caused by heart problems, excessive acceleration (G’s), shock, or a constricted blood vessel
What is hyperventilation?
A condition that occurs when excessive CO2 is removed from the body as a result of breathing too rapidly. Symptoms are similar to hypoxia.
