WHO’s health definition
‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’
Good Health
state of body and mind such that a person feels and functions well, given their circumstances, and can continue to do so or as long as possible
Health for All
level of health for all citizens that would enable them to lead socially and economically productive lives
Physical Health
How efficiently the body and its systems function
Mental Health
Refers to the state of well being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities
Social Health
How effectively people interact with others in their society and/or environment
Health Status
The level of health, or health status, of a population, group or individual
Life Expectancy
An estimate / approximation of the total number of year from the time of birth a person is expected to live under current conditions
HALE
A calculation of the number of years in full health that a newborn can expect to live without illness, disability or premature death
Disability Adjusted Life years (DALYs)
A measure of the loss of healthy life as a result of non-fatal health conditions - illness or injury - or from premature death
1 DALY is 1 year of ‘healthy’ life
Morbidity
The rate at which a particular disease, or illness occurs
Mortality
The number of deaths caused by a particular illness, disease or other environmental factor
Lifespan
From birth until death
Burden of disease
Measures the level of suffering and loss of life as a result of specific disease, illnesses or injuries within a population
Incidence
Is the number or rate of new cases of a particular condition during a specific time
