A
Waves attack the base of the cliff by abrasion and hydraulic action.

A
Harder and more resistant rock such as chalk takes longer to erode and retreat. This leaves a headland protruding over the sea.

A
Softer and less resistant rock such as boulder clay takes less time to erode and retreats quickly. This creates a bay.

A
The headland then provide shelter so that in the bay deposition occurs to form a beach.
