Head/Neck Flashcards
Masseter
Elevates the mandible
Small effect on side to side movements, protraction, and retraction
Pulls mouth closed
Temporalis
Elevates mandible (closes the jaw)
Posterior fibers retrude mandible
Assists with lateral deviation
Medial Pterygoid
Elevation (closes jaw)
Protrusion
Deviation to opposite side
Lateral Pterygoid
Assists in opening mouth
Controls backward gliding of disk and condyle during closing
Ipsilateral deviation of mandible if acting with temporalis
Contralateral deviation of mandible iif acting with medial pterygoid
Protrusion
Longus Capitis
Upper cervical flex and head on neck flex
Longus Colli
Lower cervical flexion
Rectus Capitis Anterior
Anterior flexion of head on neck (nodding)
Ipsilateral rotation
Rectus Capitis Posterior Major
Extend head
Turns face to same side
Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor
Extend, rotate neck
Oblique Capitis Inferior
Rotate head to same side
Oblique Capitis Superior
Extend head
Lateral flexion to same side
Rectus Capitis Lateralis
Lateral flexion of head to same side
Scalene Anterior
Flex lower cervical vertebrae and lateral bending
Elevate rib 1
Scalene Medius
Lateral bending of c-spine, elevates rib 1
Scalene Posterior
Lateral bending of c-spine, elevates rib 2
Platysma
Flex neck
Orbicularis oculi
Close eyelids firmly (orbital) or gently (palpebral)
Frontalis
Raise eyebrows
Nasalis
Alar - widen apertures of nostrils
Transverse - depress cartilaginous part of nose
Orbicularis oris
Close lips and protrude forward
Zygomaticus major and minor
Draws up angles of mouth (smile)
Deepens the nasolabial furor, expression of sadness
Levator Labii Superioris
Raise and protrude upper lip to show upper gums
Depressor Anguli Oris
Draw down angles of mouth
Mentalis
Raises and protrudes the lower lip and wrinkles skin of the chin as in pouting
Levator Anguli Oris
Draws angle of mouth strait upward, deepening the furrow from the side of the nose to the side of the mouth (sneer)
Depressor Labii Inferioris
Draws lower lip and angle of mouth downward and outward, tension skin over the neck
Buccinator
Press cheeks firmly against the side teeth, pulling back the angle of the mouth (blowing a trumpet)
Corrugator Supercilii
Draw eyebrows together (as in frowning)
Sternocleidomastoid
Unilaterally - rotates C-spine to opposite side and lateral flex to same side
Bilaterally - flex lower C-spine (forward translation)
Extend upper cervical
