Head and neck lymph nodes Flashcards
List the head and neck lymph nodes in order of examination
- Submental
- Submandibular
- Tonsillar (jugulodigastric)
- Parotid
- Pre-auricular
- Posterior auricular
- Superficial cervical
- Deep cervical
- Supra-clavicular
- Posterior cervical
- Occipital
What drains into the submental lymph nodes
- lower lip
- floor of mouth
- apex of tongue
What drains into the submandibular lymph nodes
- cheek
- side of nose
- lower lip
- gums
- anterior tongue
What drains into the superficial cervical lymph nodes
- lower ear
- parotid
What drains into the deep cervical lymph nodes
- other nodes of head and neck
- occipital scalp
- ear
- back of neck
- tongue
- trachea
- nasopharynx
- nasal cavities
- palate
- oesophagus
What drains into the supra-clavicular lymph nodes
- thorax
- abdomen
Outline the drainage patterns of the submental triangle
Submental nodes
- rarely involved early except in cancer of the lip
Outline the drainage patterns of the submandibular tirangle
Submandibular group
- anterior 2/3 of the tongue
- floor of the mouth
- gums
- mucosa of the cheek
Outline the drainage patterns of the pre-auricular lymph nodes
Lateral surface of the auricle and the skin of the adjacent part of the temporal region
Outline the drainage patterns of the upper jugular chain area or jugulodigastric area
Posterior auricular nodes
- nasopharynx
Outline the drainage patterns of the mid jugular chain area
Deep lateral cervical nodes
- any portion of the oral cavity
- pharynx
- larynx
- especially growth in the Waldeyer ring
(nasopharynx, tonsil, base of the tongue)
Outline the drainage patterns of the lower jugular chain area
Supra-clavicular nodes
- thyroid
- piriform sinuses
- upper oesophagus; rarely from primary below the clavicle
Outline the drainage patterns of the posterior triangle lymph nodes
- nasopharynx
- posterior scalp
- ear
- temporal bone
- skull base
Outline the drainage patterns of the occipital nodes
- occipital region of the skull
