They lie within the superficial fascia of the face (and neck)

connective tissue layer (2nd layer)
What are the key muscles of facial expression?
Frontal body of occipitofrontalis, occipital body of occipitofrontalis, buccinator, master, platysma, orbicularis oris, orbicularis oculi
What nerve supplies the muscles of facial expression?
The terminal branches of the facial nerve (Cr N VII)
What fibres do the facial nerve contain?
Motor and special sensory and parasympathetic fibres
Where does the facial nerve emerge from?
From the stylomastoid foramen
What gland would you be able to see on the side of the face of a half head model?
Parotid gland
Does the facial nerve enter the substance of the parotid gland?
Yes and it is here where it splits into its terminal branches
How many pairs of salivary glands are there?
3
What is the largest of the 3 pairs of salivary glands?
Parotid gland
What are the names of the 3 pairs of salivary glands?
Parotid, sublingual and submandibular
What is the parotid gland bounded by?
Superiorly: zygomatic arch
Inferiorly: superior border of mandible/angle of mandible
Anteriorly: masseter muscle
Posteriorly: external ear and SCM
Where does the long base of the parotid gland overlie?
The anterior border of the SCM
Where does the parotid gland extend superiorly?
Zygomatic arch
Where does the parotid gland extend inferiorly?
Angle of mandible
