Head and neck cancer is an umbrella term. It typically includes what?
- Oral cavity cancers
- Cancers of the pharynx (including the oropharynx, hypopharynx and nasopharynx)
- Cancers of the larynx
What are the red flags of head and neck cancers and what do they require?
Greater than 3 weeks of:
- Sore throat
- Hoarseness
- Stridor
- Difficulty swallowing
- Lump in neck
- Unilateral ear pain
- Oral ulceration or mass
- Red, or red and white patches that are painful, swollen or bleeding
These require urgent (2-week) referral to ENT
What is the most common type of head and neck cancers ?
Nasopharyngeal carcnioma - usually a Squamous cell cancer
Where in the world is nasopharyngeal carcinoma common?
Rare in most parts of the world, apart from individuals from Southern China
Infection with what is associated with causing nasopharyngeal carcinomas ?
EBV

How is a nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed ?
CT & MRI combined
What is the 1st line treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma ?
