Head and Neck Anatomy Flashcards
What is the Cranium?
The hollow cavity which surrounds the brain
Maxilla/ Mandible
Maxilla is the UPPER jaw
Mandible is the LOWER jaw
7 components of MAXILLA UPPER jaw
- Infra orbital foramen
- Alveolar process
- Incisive foramen palate
- Hard palate
- Greater Palatine foramen
- Lesser foramen
- Tuberosity maxillary
MAXILLA JAW (UPPER) - FORAMEN
4 main foramen
- INCISIVE foramen palate (behind the upper front teeth)
- INFA orbital foramen (outside of maxilla) under eye socket
- GREATER palatine foramen (palate)
- LESSER palatine foramen- smaller in size towards back of mouth
CLEFT palate
UNILATERAL Cleft lip- (one side)
BILATERAL Cleft lip - (2 sides)
MANDIBLE JAW (LOWER)- EXTERNAL
Ramus of mandible- vertical section
Body of mandible- horizontal section
angle of mandible- corner lower jaw
condoyle- forms part of the rounded joint (back of ramus)
external oblique line- bony ridge on outside of the ramus
coronoid process- front edge of the ramus (pointed)
sigmoid notch- dip between the coronoid process
MANDIBLE JAW (LOWER)- INTERNAL
2 main foramen
mandibular foramen (inside of the mandible)
mental foramen- outside of mandible
mvldyhoid ridge- inside of the ridge
linguala- inside of the mandibula (mound of bone infront of the foramen
What is subluxation?
JAW clicking ( meniscus) slips infront or behind the normal position during opening and closing of the mouth
What is dislocation?
Condoyle slips too far forward and gets stuck infront of the articular eminence . Jaw CANNOT move forward or backwards
What is Crepitus?
Noises from the TMJ during mandibular movement (chewing) TMJ joint crepitus is often described as clicking popping sound
MUSCLES OF MASTICATION
4 PAIRS: TEMPORALIS LATERAL PTERYOID MASSETER MEDIAL PTERYGOID
DISORDERS OF THE TONGUE
GLOSSITIS: Soreness and inflammation
DYSPHAGIA: Difficulty in swallowing,
