Head and Neck 2 Flashcards
temperomandibular joint
synovial joint between the condoyle of the mandible and the mandibular fossa (cavity) of the temporal bone
what is unique about the TMJ
it has an articular disc (fibrocartiage) that acts as a cushion between the two bones
where does the articular disc attach to
anteriorly to the lateral pterygoid muscle (responsible for opening mouth - moving mandible down)
posteriorly to retrodiscal tissue
mandible
one bone formed by the union of two halves (horizontal body and vertical ramus on both sides)
‘angle’ of the mandible
refers to the point where the ramus and body meet
what are the two processes on the mandible ramus
condoyle (TMJ)
coronoid proces
mandibular foramen
small hole where the mandibular nerve (CN V3) and some blood vessels pass through
mandibular fossa
cavity in temporal bone that allows interaction with the mandible condoyle
what is the TMJ surrounded by
a dense fibrous membrane called a capsule
mental foramen
hole in body of mandible where a branch of the mandibular nerve (CN V3) passes through
what is the most common TMJ injury
forward dislocation
what are the 4 muscles of mastication
masseter
temporalis
medial pterygoid
lateral pterygoid
medial pterygoid
elevates and protrudes the mandible
attaches to the angle
lateral pterygoid
only muscle that moves mandible down (depresses and protrudeS)
attaches at neck of mandible and capsule
temporalis muscle
broad fan shape muscle
attaches to the coronoid process of the mandible
elevates/ lifts mandible
