Otalgia
Inner ear pain
Common S&S of:
- Oropharynx cancer
- Nasopharynx cancer
Stridor
Wheezing
Common S&S of:
- Larynx cancer
Dysphagia
Difficulty swallowing.
Common S&S of:
- Oropharynx cancer (advanced disease)
- Hypopharynx cancer
Diplopia
Double vision.
Common S&S of:
- Sinus cancers
Mucositis
Inflammation of the mucous membrane that surrounds the oral cavity. Very sensitive to radiation. Can make it difficult for the patient to eat. Good oral care can help to reduce the effects.
Typically happens around a dose of 3000cGy.
Xerostomia
Dry mouth due to irradiation of the parotid glands. Typically the most concerning effect of head and neck irradiation.
Typically happens around a dose of 1000cGy with permanent loss of function at 2000cGy.
Leukoplakia
Precancerous condition of the oral cavity. Appears as white patches that form in the mouth.
Erythroplakia
Precancerous condition of the oral cavity. Appears as red area on the mucous membrane.
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath, difficulty to breathe.
