Head and Mouthparts Flashcards
Sclerites
Plates of chemically hardened integument (Natural covering)
Suture
Line or groove marking the union of two sclerites, or a line of weakness across a sclerite
Sulcus
Line marking an internal ridge or cuticle arising from an invagination or infolding

Where is segmentation readily apparent?
Everywhere on the body except on the head
Why is segmentation not readily apparent on the head?
The segments have become fused to form a continuous head capsule (more or less)
What are the 6 segments of the head?
- Labral
- Antennal
- Postantennal (or Intercalary)
- Mandibular
- Maxillary
- Labial
What is the Labrum?
Functions like an upper lip
What are the Mandibles?
Teeth for chewing food
What is the Hypopharynx?
Functions like a tongue
What are the Maxillae?
Appendages that hold and guide food for the mandibles. Also possess sensory palps.
What is the Labium?
Functions like a lower lip. Also possesses a pair of sensory palps
What are some functions of the mouthparts? (different kinds of mouthparts) (6)
- Chewing
- Piercing and Sucking
- Sponging
- Rasping and Sucking
- Siphoning
- Chewing and lapping
What are the three orientations of insect mouthparts? (Names) What are their orientations?
- Hypognathous - projecting downwards
- Prognathous - Projecting forwards
- Opisthognathous - Projecting rearwards
What are some sensory structures on the head? What are they used for? (4)
- Compound eyes - vision/image formation
- Ocelli - Light perception
- Antennae - Olfacation (smell)
- Maxillary and Labial palps - Gustation (Eating)
