- Standards for continuing professional development - professionals are expected to take part in and document regular training that they undertake to develop their own practice. This includes any training events that they attend, evidence of how they have changed their practice, and evaluation of the effectiveness of these changes

- Standards for education and training - a set minimum level of qualification is specified before people can register to practice in different areas of health and care professions. For any particular psychologist, registrants must be able to demonstrate at least a master’s degree with BPS qualification in the area of practice they will be working in, but in some areas a doctorate will be required; this is the case for clinical psychologists. The HCPC also sets out standards for training courses to ensure that any registrans who attend will be able to meet the required standards for proficiency expected of their practice
