what is HR management?
all activities and decisions made to improve the effectiveness of employees and business.
what is the aim of workforce
bridge the gap between management goals and needs of work force ( balance between what the business wants - money - and what employees want - no working overtime, good pay.)
what is the focus of HR function?
- interpretation of needs
- co ordination of management + requirements
- implementation of activites
what is manpower planning?
prerequisite for recruitment and selection. how many employees needed, what skills and when they are needed.
what are 3 things needed for accurate manpower planning?
- job analysis - all tasks and responsibilities associated with each job. found in interviews, questionnaires and observations.
- job description - what the job is about, title summary conditions how why and when things are done
- job specification - about workers, what skills and experiences. guide for recruitment and selection
what is recruiting?
attracts job applicants with skills and motivation to cover manpower. 1. within firm (appointed to new positions, transfer, upgrade) 2. outside business ( appointing people from other businesses)
what s selections and appointment?
choosing the most suitable candidate, aimed to exclude unsuitable applicants, should result in lower turnover of staff.
8 steps for selection and appointment
- receipt of application form ( all relevant info is received)
- initial screening (evaluate cvs to see if they meet the requirements)’
- short list (compares applicant to a predetermined list of criteria)
- reference and background check (list of questions verifies their references and fairness)
- conduct interviews ( to be fair to all people, )
- test & examinations ( work sample test, psychometric test, medical exams)
- ranking candiates (highest rated gets postition)
- sign employment contract
