HBio 4.4 Chem Study Guide Flashcards
What is a hydrogen bond?
a weak bond between two molecules resulting from an electrostatic attraction between a proton in one molecule and an electronegative atom in the other.
What is a dipole-dipole bond?
A dipole-dipole force is when the positive side of a polar molecule attracts the negative side of another polar molecule. In order for this kind of bond to work, the molecules need to be very close to each other, like they are in a liquid.
What is London dispersion?
The London dispersion force is a temporary attractive force that results when the electrons in two adjacent atoms occupy positions that make the atoms form temporary dipoles.
Which type of bond is the weakest link?
London dispersion
Which type of bond is the strongest link?
Hydrogen Bond
What are the types of bonds ranked from weakest to strongest?
London dispersion, Dipole-Dipole interaction, Hydrogen bond
