Tectonic hazard
A large scale earthquake
Natural event
A natural event (like a volcanic eruption, flood, drought, tsunami) that occurs but presents no risk to human life or property
Natural hazard
Something that is potentially dangerous to people and property
Natural disaster
An event which is much larger than expected, resulting in excessive damage to life and property
Earthquake
A series of vibrations and shockwaves across the crust of the earth caused by tectonic activity

Weath, age, urbanisation, technological advancements
Interplate earthquake
An earthquake which occurs on the boundary between two tectonic plates
Intraplate earthquake
An earthquake that occurs within the interior of a tectonic plate
Tectonic plate
A giant slab of the earth’s crust which moves along the mantle
