Employment sector
A classification system for types of employment
Heavy industry
Industries like steel making, ship building and mining that are dependent on heavy raw material to produce bulky goods
Light industry
Manufacturing where both the raw materials and final goods are less bulky and can be easily transported, like food processing and household electrical goods
High-tech industry
Manufacturing involving advanced technology, such as the making of microchips and computers, genetic engineering, communications and information technology, eg. biotech firms, pharmaceutical and drug companies
Science park
A landscape area which brings together a number of high tech industries with links to universities
De-industrialisation
The decline in the importance of manufacturing in an industrialised country
TNC’s (transnational companies)
Companies that operate in many countries around the world
FDI (foreign direct investments)
When companies from one country invest in the operations in another country
