Hazards Flashcards
Types of natural hazard
Volcano eruptions
Earthquakes
Storms
Tsunami
Natural hazard
A natural event that has had a social impact
Hazard risk
The chance of being affected by a natural event
People who choose to live closer to a river are at risk from flooding
Factors that affect risk
Urbanisation
Poverty
Farming
What happens at plate margins
Constructive
Destructive
Conservative
Plate margin eg
Iceland is a country in the north Atlantic Ocean it is situated on the mid Atlantic Ridge a plate margin where two plates are moving away from each other, there are several active volcanoes in Iceland.
Constructive
Where two plate move apart
Magma is forcing its way to surface as it breaks through the overlying crust it causes earthquakes
The magma at constructive margins very hot and fluid lava erupting from the volcano will flow along way before calling this results in a typically broad and flat shield volcano
Destructive
Where two plates are moving towards one another
Friction between these plates can cause strong earthquakes and as the oceanic plate moves downwards and melts which creates magma which breaks through to the surface to form a volcano.
The two plates collide and become crumpled and uplifted which form mountains
Conservative
Where two plates are sliding alongside each other.
Friction between the plates cause earthquakes such as the San Andreas fault in California
Immediate responses
Search and rescue and keeping survivors alive by providing medical care, food, water and shelter
Long-term response
Rebuilding and reconstruction, with the aim of returning peoples lives back to normal and reducing future risk
Tropical storm
That huge storm that develops in the tropics they are very powerful and can cause huge damage
How do tropical storms form
Firstly a strong upward movement of air draws water vapour from the ocean surface
Then this evaporated air cools as it rises and condenses to form thunderstorm clouds
Then as the air condenses it really does heat which powers the storm
Then several small thunderstorms joined together to form a giant spinning storm
This develops and I at its centre where air descends rapidly
