Hazards Flashcards
What is the definition of a Natural hazard
Naturally occurring physical phenomena that either cause rapid or slow onset events which could be geophysical, hydrological, climatological, meteorological or biological.
What is the definition of a Technological / man made hazard
Events that are caused by humans and occur in or close to human settlements. this can include environmental degradation, pollution and accidents as well as conflict, famine, displaced populations, industrial accidents and transport accidents.
What features do all natural hazards have:
- clear origin and distinctive effects
- little to no warning
- exposure to risk that may be involuntary
- most of the damage and loss of life occur shortly after the hazard but impacts may last into the future
- the scale and impact requires an emergency response
Why does Lori peak believe that disasters are not only caused by nature but by culture
for an event to be a hazard it has to have a human impact which requires humans to be in an area of danger
what features impact a persons perception of natural hazards
- socioeconomic status
- levels of education
- occupation / employment status
- religion, cultural / ethical background
- family and marital status
- past experience
- values, personality and expectations
what ways do people attempt to manage natural hazards
- prediction
- prevention
- protection
what is fatalism
the view that some people choose where they wont protect themselves against natural disasters and anything that happens will happen
what is adaptiotion
people understand that they have greater survival chances if they predict, prevent or protect themselves against a disaster
what is fear in terms of an approach to natural disasters
they can no longer face living in an area or putting themself at risk to any disaster
what is risk sharing
risk sharing is the focus of a group to protect everyone i equally through awareness programs, evacuation procedures, emergency medical, food and shelter supplies
what is integrated risk management
the process of considering all of the factors involved in risk analysis to decide on the actions to minimize damage / disruption
what are the primary effects of a natural disaster
the things that result directly from a hazard such as lava or ground ruptures
what are the secondary effects of a natural disaster
these are the things that come as a result of the primary effects, these can be flooding or fires
what is the park model
it is a model of the damage caused to and reconstruction of a country of community after a natural disaster
what re the 4 stage of the park model
- pre disaster
- relief
- rehabilitation
- reconstruction
