Hazardous waste
Waste that is dangerous or potentially harmful to our health or environment.
Pharmaceutical hazardous waste can be:
- liquids
- solids
- gases
- sludge
- expired medications or chemical supplys
Who regulates pharmaceutical hazardous waste
By the u.s. environmental protection agency and equivalent state agencies and must be handled by the approved waste hauler
Hazardous waste is classified into
4 unique categories based on the individual products
- Cii
- Ciii-v
- p-listed (acutely toxic pharmaceutical hazardous waste)
- non- controlled prescription drugs
Hazardous waste can include
- patient vials
- damaged products
- STARS returns
- expired products
- loose/ dropped pills

Key changes to hazardous waste part 1
Hazardous waste claims can now be created on the handheld device (previously, this was managed via stock adjustments)
- select pharmacy team members can now create hazardous waste claims for non-controlled and P-listed products
-Pharmacists can now create hazardous waste claims for all drug classes (non-controlled, controlled, and P-listed products)
Key changes to hazardous waste part 2
-all controlled products need to be approved by the pharmacist
- all products that are over a specified dollar threshold will have to be approved by the pharmacist on the desktop
Key changes to hazardous waste part 3
Remember, RxI is a perpetual inventory system, and on-hands quantities are tracked at the NDC/pill level
- do not wait to open a claim because your inventory quantities will be inaccurate
- as best practice, any items in a hazardous waste claims should be approved as soon as possible
Key changes to hazardous waste part 4
- hazardous waste claims can now be reviewed, edited, and deleted on the desktop
- when claims are given to the waste hauler, they will now need to be scanned out which will move it to a shipped status
-team members now have the ability to view hazardous waste claims history on the desktop
