Primary Triage
Evaluation of patients that occurs immediately upon arrival of the first EMS crew at the actual site of the incident to quickly categorize the severity of a patient’s condition and priority for treatment and transport.
Secondary Triage
Re-evaluation that takes place in the triage unit of the severity of a patient’s condition and priority for treatment and transport.
Triage of patients based on color
Red: Yellow: Green: Priority 3 Black: Priority 0
Green-labeled patients (MCI)
Patients with minor musculoskeletal injuries “Walking wounded” - Alert, & can follow commands
Yellow-labeled patients
- Pt’s with burns without airway problems - Major or multiple skeletal injures - Back injuries with or without spinal cord damage- - Ask the patient to squeeze your fingers.The patient should obey your command
Red-labeled patients
- Patients with airway or breathing difficulties - Uncontrolled or severe bleeding - Decreased mental status - Severe medical problems - Shock - Severe burns
Black-labeled patients
- Dead or fatally injured - Patients with exposed brain matter - Patients in cardiac arrest (warm & no pulse for over 20 min) - Decapitation - Severed trunk - Incineration
