Hazardous earth Flashcards
1
Q
What two ways is heat redistributed by air movements?
A
- Pressure differences
- Ocean currents
2
Q
How does land heat up in the summer and does it form areas of high or low pressure?
A
- dark surfaces absorb light, which is converted to heat
- heats quickly in summer but only at the surface so cools quickly in winter
- when it heats, it also heats the air above, so air expands, becomes lighter + rises
- Forms areas of low pressure in summer
3
Q
How does the sea heat up in the summer and does it form areas of high or low pressure?
A
- sunlight is reflected from the surface
- some sunlight is absored to 30m depth
- so sea takes longer to heat and longer to cool
- in summer air over the sea remains cooler + denser forming areas of high pressure
4
Q
What do differences in pressure cause?
A
- Causes air to move from a high to a low pressure creating wind
- The wind moves in a circular way because of yhe Earth’s rotation
