Hazardous Earth Flashcards
Deaths in Hurricane Katrina
1833 deths
People displaced in Hurricane Katrina
1 million people displaced
Long term problems caused by Hurricane Katrina
- contaminated groundwater
- destroyed coastal habitats
- deaths
Hurricane Katrina category
Category 5 hurricane
New Orleans flooding
80% of New Orleans flooded
Problems caused by cyclone aila
- ruined crops
- killed livestock
- destruction of costal embankments
- polluted water supply’s
What did cyclone aila result in
3 metre storm surge
Cyclone
System of wind that rotates inwards
Greenhouse effect
Trapping the suns rays that warms the earth
Climate change
A change in global climate patterns
Japan’s earthquake Richter scale
9.0 on the Richter scale
Deaths cause by the Japanese earthquake
1479 deaths
Problems caused by Japanese earthquake
- 56 bridges collapsed
- dam burst
- deaths
- 1.2 million buildings damaged
Haiti earthquake Richter scale
7.0 on the Richter scale
Deaths caused by Haiti’s earthquake
316,000 deaths
Problems caused by Haiti’s earthquake
- 1.5 million made homeless
- cholera spread through squatter camps
- looting+crime increased
- Haiti’s port badly damaged
What did the Japanese earthquake result in
The earthquake set off a tsunami
Cyclone management techniques
- weather forecasting
- evacuation
- warning systems
- satellite technology
- storm surge defences
Tree rings
Cutting open a tree results in many rings being shown, each ring is a year the tree has lived. A warm and wet year means the tree ring will be further apart and a closer tree ring is a colder and drier year
Ice cores
Chunks of ice which contain carbon dioxide bubbles. The more carbon dioxide the hotter the climate was
Historical resources
Written sources like diaries, books and old newspapers that contain information about the weather
The earths structure in order:
- continental crust
- upper mantle
- Lower mantle
- outer core
- inner core
How do cyclones form?
They form near the equator where the sea is the right temperature at 26.5 degrees with strong wind patterns
All the earths cells
- polar cells, suns rays are less intense and spread over a wider area
- Ferrell cells
- Hadley cells, the suns rays are more intense which leads to hotter temperatures
Divergent plate boundary
Two plates move apart on the sea floor creating a mid open ridge, magma rises solidify sand creates shield volcanoes
Conservative plate boundary’s
Two plates move past each other sometimes causing earthquakes
Convergent (both)
(Continental-continental)
Push together to form gold mountains as two plates meet and rise upwards
(Oceanic-continental)
The Oceanic plate moves under the continental plate forming a sea trench and volcanoes
