Hazardous Earth Flashcards
Continental crust
This forms the land on Earth, mostly made of granite and is usually between 30-50km thick
Oceanic crust
Crust underneath the ocean which is a lot thinner than continental crust but more dense.
Lithosphere
The continental crust and the oceanic crust
Asthenosphere
Upper layer of the mantle, partially molten lubricates lithosphere
Tectonic plates
Separate pieces of the lithosphere
Mantle
Solid and largest layer of the Earth
Plume
When heat from a convection cell moves towards the surface of the Earth. Plumes can lead to: Hot spots; volcanoes in the middle of tectonic plates. (Can also be found at constructive boundaries).
Geo thermal
Heat from the Earth
Radioactive decay
Some elements are naturally unstable and radioactive. Atoms of these elements release particles that give off heat.
Convection currents
Are currents in the outer core that move the crust on the surface
Continental drift
The idea that the Earth’s tectonic plates move
Pangea
Super continent that existed on Earth 250 million years ago
