hazard management cycle and Parks model Flashcards
what is a hazard management cycle (hmc)
a process in which government and organisations work together to protect people from natural hazards
name some factors recovery of hmc will be dependent on
magnitude
development level
governance (eg corruption)
external help
if response of hmc is slow then…
recover is delayed/prolonged and country may not recover to its previous quality of life

What is the Parks model (hazard-response curve)
is a model that shows how a country or region might respond after a hazard event. It can be used to directly compare how areas at different levels of development might recover from a hazard
Why is it important to manage hazards?
Hazards can cause severe disruption to people and places all over the world. Effects of natural hazard events can include death; injury; displacement; spread of disease; destruction of infrastructure and habitats; economic breakdown and higher crime rates. Such effects can cause significant damage to ecosystems and civilisation and so should be prevented, avoided or mitigated where possible. The hazard management cycle provides a mechanism to do this.
