Who was the Haudenosaunee?
The Haudenosaunee are called people of the longhouse and became part of the 6 nation confederacy.
What are they known for?
Agricultural skills, as they planted crops of corn beans and squash. (the three sisters)
What else did they do for food?
They gathered berries, nuts, and also took part in hunting and fishing.
What were their homes like?
Longhouses in villages, with protective walls.
Why did they move locations?
When farmland was bad.
What was their family structure?
They had a clan system based on the female line.
Who was the head of the longhouse?
The clan mother
Who lived in the same house?
All related females with their families.
Who would children call mother?
Their birth mother and her sisters.
How did they pass on history, values, and beliefs?
Verbally.
How was life divided?
Through gender roles.
What were the men’s jobs?
hunting, trapping, clearing land, building, carving, making things like bowls.
What were the woman’s jobs?
Planting, tending and harvesting crops, curing hides and making clothing and meals.
Beliefs?
The creator gave them gifts, which were their values and traditions. A common belief was that the human and natural world should be in harmony.
How have they been affected?
Through new diseases and illnesses from explorers.
