Consonant
Described as pleasant & agreeable - Dissonant intervals usually want to resolve to them.
Dissonant
Sound tense & unstable. They usually need to resolve.
Diatonic
All the notes are from the key.
Primary triads
Chords I, IV & V
& have intervals of root, 3rd & 5th.
Dominant 7th
Root, Major 3rd, Perfect 5th & Minor 7th.
Inversions
Chords that don't begin from root position but the 3rd or 5th. Eg. Root/ I : CEG 1st inversion/ Ib : EGC 2nd inversion/ Ic : GCE
Substitution chords
Using a another chord in place of another, often related chord in a chord progression. Often used by Jazz artists to add variety.
Secondary Dominant 7th
Borrow a chord V7 from the target chords key.
Perfect cadence
Chords I, V, I.
Imperfect cadence
Finishes on chord V.
Interrupted cadence
Surprise cadence - run up to a perfect cadence & then the last chord is minor.
Plagal cadence
Amen.
IV, I
Circle of 5ths
Up by 5 for #s: G,D,A,E
Down by 5 for b’s: F, Bb,Eb,Ab
Tierce de Piccardie
Minor key ends in a major chord.
Harmonic sequence
A combination of harmonic root movements by a particular interval, & all voices moving in recurring sequential patterns.
Tonic pedal
Pedal note (sustained note as the harmony changes) on the tonic note.
Dominant pedal
Pedal point/note (sustained note as the harmony changes) on the dominant.
Inverted pedal
Pedal point(sustained note) on a part other than the bass. Usually the highest part.
Inner pedal
Pedal point on one of the inner parts of the music.
4 - 3 suspension
The note that needs to resolve is a 4th over the new chord &hit resolves to a 3rd.
7 - 6 suspension
The note that needs to resolve is a 7th from the bass & it resolves to a 6th.
9 - 8 suspension
Has a suspended note by a 9th from the bass and it resolves by moving down a step so that the notes are the same.
Cadential 6/4
Root of the dominant horse + Appoggiaturas for the 4th and 6th of the chord.
Relative key
The relative minor is the minor key with the same key dig e.g Cmaj & Amin.
Parallel key
Minor key based on the same tonic.
Harmonic speed.
The rate at which the chords change.
