Harmony Flashcards
What is dissonance?
Chords which use notes not in the diatonic chord.
What is a concord?
A concord is a chord where all the notes seem to ‘agree’ with each other. It feels at rest and complete in itself.
What is a discord?
A discord is a chord where some notes seem to ‘disagree’ or clash giving an unsettled feel.
What is diatonic harmony?
Diatonic harmony uses notes that belong to the key.
What is chromatic harmony?
Chromatic harmony uses notes from outside the key to give the chords more ‘colour’.
What is a perfect cadence?
V-I
What is an interrupted cadence?
V-vi
What is an imperfect cadence?
anything - V
What is a plagal cadence?
IV- I
What is a Tierce de Picardie?
When final cadence of a piece in a minor key ends with a major chord instead of the expected minor.
What is a suspension?
A note from one chord is sustained into the next chord creating a dissonance. The note must then resolve downwards to form a consonance with the next chord.
What is the structure of a diminished 7th?
Tonic, minor 3rd, diminished 5th and diminished 7th.
(the notes are all a minor third apart)
What is the structure of a half diminished?
Same as a diminished seventh but with a minor 7th at the top rather than a diminished seventh. (more jazzy feel)
What is the secondary dominant?
The dominant of the dominant chord in the home key (for example in C major the secondary dominant would be d major because its the dominant of G.)
What is a chromatic alteration?
Moving one of the notes up or down a semitone in a chord (examples often in Samba em Preludio.)
What are augmented chords?
Chord with an augmented 5th.
What is a bare fifth?
Triad missing the third (so its just a BARE FIFTH.)
What is quartal harmony?
Harmonic structures built on the use of perfect, diminished and augmented 4ths as intervals.
What is an added 6th chord?
A triad with a 6th above the root.
What is a Neapolitan chord?
A flattened second chord in first inversion.
What is static harmony?
Harmony focusing essentially on one chord.
What is substitution chord?
A chord that can replace another chord, which fulfills the same harmonic function as the chord it has replaced.
