Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium Flashcards
What is a population? What defines a population?
A group of organisms that live together in a defined area
Can interbreed w/ different populations
When a population becomes fragmented, separate populations form
What is a Gene Pool? Is variety a good or bad thing?
The sum of all the alleles for all the genes in a population
More variety is better
What is Evolution?
Change across successive generations in the heritable characteristics of biological populations
What is the Hardy Weinburg Pinciple?
If allele frequencies stay the same over time w/ each generation the population is stable & unchanging
No evolution is occurring
What are the Five conditions for HWE?
Large Population (no genetic drift)
Random Mating (no choosing mates)
No mutations - no changes to alleles
No Immigration/Emigration
No Natural Selection
What are the two equations for HWE?
Genotype, p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
Allele, p + q = 1
p2 = Frequency of Homozygous Dominant individuals
p = Frequency of Dominant Alleles
2pq = Frequency of Heterozygous individuals
q2 = Frequency of Homozygous Recesssive individuals
q = Frequency of Recessive Alleles
