Q

What is a population? What defines a population?

A

A group of organisms that live together in a defined area
Can interbreed w/ different populations
When a population becomes fragmented, separate populations form

Q

What is a Gene Pool? Is variety a good or bad thing?

A

Q

What is the Hardy Weinburg Pinciple?

Q

What are the Five conditions for HWE?

A

Large Population (no genetic drift)
Random Mating (no choosing mates)
No mutations - no changes to alleles
No Immigration/Emigration
No Natural Selection

Q

What are the two equations for HWE?

A

Genotype, p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1

Allele, p + q = 1

p2 = Frequency of Homozygous Dominant individuals
p = Frequency of Dominant Alleles
2pq = Frequency of Heterozygous individuals
q2 = Frequency of Homozygous Recesssive individuals
q = Frequency of Recessive Alleles
