Houses components of computer system
Motherboard
Backbone of the computer system. It is the component that many other components plug into and/or interface with. Some components are built into it ie. audio, USB, network, graphics etc. these are referred to as being on board.
CPU (central processing unit)
Brains of the computer. It performs functions, calculations and executes commands. It’s first performance measure is clock speed (a clock speed of 3.4 GHz can perform 3,400,000,000.00 clock cycles per second. Modern processors offer multiple core, hyper-threaded processors. And some computers have multiple processors.
RAM (random access memory)
RAM is a temporary storage that is cleared when powered down. It attaches directly to the mother board and stores program and files currently in use to allow faster access to reading and writing.
Hard Drive
Long term digital storage device. Almost always solid state drives (SSD’s). They can be internal or external like USB’s or flash drives.
Graphics Card
Graphics cards are important for the visual output the computer system is producing. Some can be very expensive and high end including GPUs (graphic processing units). They also support output interfaces such as HDMI and DisplayPort.
Input and Output Devices
Common input devices include mouse, keyboard, scanner, microphone and more. Output devices include monitor and printer.
Mobile Devices
Common mobile devices are phones and tablets.
