Hardware Flashcards
RAM speeds are measured using what?
DDR or PC ratings
What RAM runs at the Mother board speed and has 2 notches in the stick?
SD RAM
What does DDR in DDR RAM stand for?
Double Data Rate.
How do you calculate the PC speed rating?
Multiply the DDR Speed Rating x8
Clock Speed VS DDR Speed
DDR Speed is double the clock speed (DDR=Double Data Rate)
DDR 4 is associated with Bandwidth, how is the bandwidth measured?
MT/s - Mega Transfers per second
RAM sticks with RAM on both sides are called
Double sided RAM sticks.
What is important to remember when installing RAM in Duel-Channel Memory
The 2 RAM sticks must be the exact same size and speed is specific slots.
What is a Parity Chip?
Found on Parity RAM sticks, an additional chip added to RAM sticks in case of a RAM chip failure.
What is an ECC (Error Correcting Code) Chip?
Same function as a Parity chip (checks for RAM errors), but can handle 2 RAM chip failures. Can only be used on Motherboards designed to use it.
What is a SO-DIMM?
Small outline duel inline memory module. Same functionality and capacity as other RAM sticks but smaller, usually used in smaller devices like laptops.
What is an SPD chip and what does it do?
The Serial Presence Detect (SPD) Chip is a tiny chip on the RAM stick that has the information about the chip, i.e. Speed/Manufacturer/Model/Capacity/ etc.
CPU-Z
A program that can read SPD info.
What is the Paging File?
The part of the Hard Drive set aside for Virtual Memory/ Virtual RAM
What is the Swap File?
Virtual Memory
