Q

Embedded systems

A

the embedded system is built into / integrated (into the car alarm)
* combination of hardware and software designed for a specific function
* must have a processor, memory and input / output
* The system is not easily changed/updated by the car owner

Q

Laser Printer

A

The printer uses a laser (beam) and a rotating mirror to draw the contents of the
page on the photosensitive drum as an electrostatic charge. The toner is attracted
to this charge.

Q

Purpose of RAM and ROM in a laser printer

A

RAM
* Stores currently running parts of the printer software
* Stores the data being printed // contents of buffer
* Stores current progress of printing
* Stores the data about the printer, e.g. toner levels

        ROM
        * Stores the printer operating software // OS for the printer
        * Stores the boot-up/start-up instructions for the printer
        * Printer fonts stored in ROM

Q

3D printer

A

Based on inkjet and laser printer tech
a solid object is built layer by layer using powdered resin or powdered metal, paper or ceramic

Q

Direct 3D printing

A

Uses inkjet technology, a print head moves left to right, the print head can also move up and down to build layers of the objects.
Uses 2 pass, where first pas sprays dry powder and the second pass a binder is sprayed to form a solid layer.
Uses UV to harden the liquid polymer.

Q

ROM in embedded systems

A

To store data that does not change
Data must be stored even when the device is out of power
To store system re-boot instructions

Q

Speakers

A

Digital data goes through ADC, then through the amplifier to create a large enough drive to a speaker. Electric current is then fed to the speaker where it is converted into sound.
Current flows through the coil in the iron core - becomes a temporary electromagnet

Q

Microphones

A

Diaphragm in the microphone pick up vibrations. Diaphragm begins to vibrate, cone moves in and out causing the copper coil to move front and back. This causes a magnetic field around the permanent which induces a electric current which then amplified or sent to a recording device.
