Hardening, tempering, and annealing Flashcards
1
Q
What is Hardening?
A
Hearting the components above the critical temp (normalising), holding the temp and cooling at a rate to allow the material to transform to a harder, stronger structure. Can only occur in medium and high carbon steels.
2
Q
What is Tempering?
A
Heated to below the critical temperature then cooled in the air. It toughens the materials by lessening brittleness and reducing internal stresses.
3
Q
What is Hooke’s Law?
A
The strain in a solid is proportional to the applied stress within the elastic limit of that solid.
