Hard Drive Types Flashcards
Hard disk drive is abbreviated as HDD
What are the components?
there are three main components, the controller, the hard disk, and a host bus adapter or HBA
HD: solid metal disc that conducts electricity very well as it’s written by an electric charge.
- Each disc is referred to as a platter that has a top/ bottom layer. So 3 discs would equal 6x writable surfaces.
the controller, as its name indicates, controls all of the operations of the drive
Host Bus Adapter: acts as the translator converting signals from comp to elec charges so they can be written.
The language it uses is binary. so 1’s and 0’s.
Most common type of interface for a HDD?
is what’s known as serial ATA or SATA
8 inch vs 2.5 inch vs 3.5 inch
So 1.8 inch, not very commonly used but it does exist. The most common are 2.5 in a laptop or perhaps a portable external drive. And 3.5 inch is the mainstream type used in a desktop system. Now, a solid-state drive is a little bit different.
SSD
They require less power, they produce less noise, and they’re usually physically smaller as well
Solid state: no moving parts, nonvolatile nand flash memory.
-does not require power to retain data-
Hybrid drives
hybrid drives which are a combination of hard drives with some solid-state memory as well.
They tend to have greater capacity than the solid-state drives. And they do offer performance that is probably somewhere in between
