Handouts Flashcards
Useful Problem Statements (RQ & H), Specific
- Must be within researchers capabilities (realistic)
- Must be narrow (pinpoint IV/DV)
- Must contain comm. variables (behavior)
- Must be testable (observable, measurable, no “god”)
- Must not advance personal value judgements
- Must be clear grammatical statements
Descriptive research question
Describes behavior, what is communicative behavior x? “What is complaint making?”
Relational research question
What is the relationship (association) between x and y? “What is the relationship between jealousy and relational satisfaction?”
Non-directional (2-tailed) Hypotheses
Broad, not specific, “There will be gender orientations in comforting behaviors”
Directional (1-tailed) Hypothesis
Specific prediction “Masculine-oriented participants will less likely use comforting behaviors”
2 gains of resaerchers
Social regularities: not individual behavior
Aggregates: averages, mass, general picture
2 pillars of observation
logic (must makes sense) and observation (what we observe)
Scientific enterprise
Theory, data collection, data analysis
Epistemology
The science of knowing
Methodology
The science of finding out
Cloud Diagram
- Conceptulization: Identify topic, review literature, conceptually define variables, phrase rq & h
- Planning and Design: Set deadlines, operationalize variables, choose methods
- Data Collection: Quantative methods: qualitative methods, survey: qualitative interviewing, experimental studies: ethnography, content analysis
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: Run statistical tests, code data
- Reconceptulization: Draw conclusion, address limitations, advice for further research
Conceptulization
Identify topic, review literature, conceptually define variables, phrase RQ & H
Planning & Design
Set deadlines, operationalize variables, choose methods
Data Collection
Using quantatative methods: using qualitative methods, survey: qualitative interviewing, experimental studies: ethnography, content analysis
Data Analysis & Interpretation
Run statistical tests, code data
Reconceptulization
Draw conclusion, address limitations, advice for further research
Qualitative Research Paradigms
Interviewing, Ethnography
Primary sources
I collect data and report on it
Secondary sources
Cite others data, just like a textbook
Unit of Analysis
Groups of people, how they use symbols, social artifacts (graffitti) individuals, textual artifacts
Mediator
Comes in between the IV and DV, extraneous & intervenieng variable
IV
Predictor
DV
Outcome
Construct Vs. Variable: Jealousy
Construct: jealousy
Variable: level/degree/types of jealousy
References vs. Bibliography
References are everything that you have cited, bibliography things you read. We use references.
Conceptual definition
Broad, abstract, Love=commitment
Operational definition
specific, measurable, empirical. Love= I say I love you 5x every day.
