MICROORGANISM
A living thing or organism that is so small it can only be seen under a microscope, also called a MICROBE.
DISINFECTION
Process that destroys most, but not all, pathogens and other types of microorganisms.
STERILIZATION
Cleaning measures that destroy all microorganisms, including pathogens.
STANDARD PRECAUTIONS
A method of infection prevention in which all blood, body fluids, nonintact skin, and mucous membranes are treated as if they were infected with an infectious disease.
TRANSMISSION PRECAUTIONS
Guidelines used for persons who are infected or may be infected with certain infectious diseases. Used in addition to Standard Precautions.
Three categories include AIRBORNE, DROPLET, and CONTACT precautions.
PATHOGEN
Microorganisms that are capable of causing infection and disease.
CONTAMINATION
Disease causing organisms or infectious material on a surface or substance.
FOMITE
An object that is contaminated with a pathogen and can spread the pathogen to another person.
BARIATRIC
Relating to or specializing in the treatment of obesity.
CYANOSIS
A bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
SHEARING
When tissue layers move over the top of each other, causing blood vessels to stretch and break as they pass through the subcutaneous tissue.
DYSPHAGEA
Difficulty swallowing
MECHANICAL LIFT
Devices used to assist with transfers and movement of individuals who require support for mobility beyond the manual support provided by caregivers alone.
DANGLING
An intermediary stage of assisting people into the sitting position with their legs hanging over the side of the bed, before moving them into the standing position.
SHARPS CONTAINER
Bio-hazard container for the safe disposal of needles, slides, and contaminated sharp equipment.
