A
Born in Halle and begins his studies there with Zachow. Went to Hamburg and meet Buxtehude. 1705: opera Almira: first opera, composed when he was 19 years old. went to Italy, then come Back to Germany and then goes to England in 1712 and became a naturalized British subject. Died in London (monument in Westminster Abbey).

- seventh suite for Harpsichord (1720)
- 42 operas, 25 oratorios, 120 cantatas, trios and duets, arias, chamber music, odes and serenatas, 18 concerto grossi and 12 organ concertos.
- most famous work: oratorio Messiah in 1741. With it’s Hallelujah chorus, most popular works in chorale music, centerpiece of the Christmas season.
