Much of his work was not recovered until the 20th century, much more remains lost
Keyboard works: 19 preludes, most important contribution to the music literature. Sectional compositions that alternate between free improvisations and strict counterpoint . Written in fugal manner. Heavy use of pedal and idiomatic to the organ. Certainly an influence for Bach. Stylus phantasticus: most free and unrestrained method of Composing.
Chorale settings: 40 chorale settings. 30 chorale preludes: polyphonic prolongation or elaboration of a chorale tune on the organ. One voice or/and motives drawn from it formed the basis of a polyphonic texture.
