Hand Tools Flashcards
What are the types of Hammers
Claw Hammer- (Carpentry) Wood, Steel, Fiber glass and Graphite
Finish Hammer- Lighter hammer
Framing Hammer- for larger nails thick material in wood framing
Dry wall Hammer- Sheet rock (lighter than Normal)
Ball Peen Hammer- Metal work, (machinist hammer) 4oz- 4lb (dont use for nails)
Sledge hammer- us to brake up Iron or concreter (2-20lb)
How many type of Sledge Hammer and Names
- Double Face Long- Handle, Double- Face Short Handle
Crosspeen
Types of Nail pullers
Cat paw- Straight bar use for pulling nails that are flush or below surface of the wood (need another tool to pull them out)
Chisel Bar- is like a cat claw but has a bevel (chisel shaped end )
Wrecking Bar/ Rippingbar- pull nails at a angel and have wedge for prying at the end (Used for Demolishing wood framing
(the longer the bar the more leverage )
Types of Chisel
Cold Chisels- used on metal
Wood Chisels- for wood
Cape Chisels- the cutting tip is slightly wilder the the body (use for cutting grooves
Types of Punch
Center Punch- Mark point on metal, Heavier Punches with tip ground at 60-Degree angle (make smaller impression) for
Prick Punch- used to mark point on metal
Tapered Punch- used to drove on pins and align the holes. (more Blunt)
types of Screws Drives
- Slotted — A very common type of screwdriver, but it also provides the least amount of grip in the screw head, limiting the amount of torque that can be applied.
- Phillips - The most common type of crosshead screwdriver, offering better grip over the slotted design.
- Clutch-drive - Has an hourglass-shaped head that provides good grip; common where security from vandalism is desirable.
- Torx® — Has a star-shaped tip, widely used for mechanical assembly and repair work; also popular in residential construction.
- Robertson® (square) - Has a square drive that provides extra grip to apply torque. Like the Torx®, the Robertson® drive has also become popular in residential construction, for both interior and exterior applications.
- Allen® (hex) — Works with socket-head screws that have a female, hex-shaped (six-sided) recess. Allen® wrenches, which are typically L-shaped steel bars, are generally referred to as wrenches instead of screwdrivers.
type of Wrenches
open-End- open end are the easiest to use- you can position tool around fastener but with less grip (2 sizes on one wrench
Box End wrench- go around the whole fastener have 6-12 sizes, 6 more secure, 12 better in tight quarters
Offset Ratcheting Box wrench- excellent for assembly work
Combination- have box and open
Types Adjustable Wrenches/ Crescent
Adjustable Wrench- used the same as other wrenches, but better for holding other side while using wreath
Pipe Wrench- foe fighting and loosing thread pipes (both jaw have teeth) and are spring load
Spus Wrench- are just like pipe wrenches but no teeth (smooth) used for large nuts, in plumbing
What is Socket wrenches
socket wrenches use ratcheting mechanism, enables the user to quickly tightenn or loosen a fastener without removing and refitting the wrench after each other
types of handle in a socket set?
Racket Handle- has a knob use to change direction (longer the handle the more leveragea)
Hinge socket wrench/ Breaker bar - for breaking difficult Fastener loose (long a and more durable
How many Piers
Slipt- Joint Pliers- are use for bending wire and griping objects, and have adjustable jaws
Long- Pliers Lineman Plier- used for getting in type space and gripping thing to small to grip with fingers (Have spring)
Lineman Pliers- used for cutting wires and holding material
Tongue and groove Pliers- grip flat, square, round, or Hexagonal objects - long handle provide leverage
Locking Pliers- Vise grips, grib metal and good to grip thing already damaged
Measuring Tools
Steel Rule- usually 6 to 12 inches (very accurate)
Tape Measure- curve to strengthen the blade when it is extended
Wooden Folding-
Laser measuring
Levels and Layout tools
Two-foot level-
torpedo level- use full for pipefitting
Digital level
Laser Level
Types of Squares
Carpenter Square/ Framing Square- (Speed square)
Rafter angle Square- also has a protractor
Try Square- fixed 90 degrees- for checking if lumber is warped
Combination square- can do 90 and 45 some have levels
what’s a Plumb
when installing support post under a beam, a plum can show direct under the bean that require support
what’s a chalk Line
chalk lines are use to mark long , straight lines on smooth surfaces
6 types of Saw
Backsaw- For cutting through finish Lumber and Miter Joints, it designed for smoother cuts
Keyhole Saw- it can cut curves quickly (
Coping Saw- narrow flexible blade on u-shaped frame( used for tighter curves and circles I finishing Carpentry
Drywall saw- long and narrow - for cutting soft building material
Hand Saw- Cross saw, designed for cutting across grain of wood, Ripsaw cut with grain
Hack saw- cut metal like bolt and pipes, the finer teeth,
types of clamps
C-Clamp
Locking C- Clamps Pliers
Spring Clamp
Bar Clamp
Pipe Clamp
Hand-Screw Clamp
what’s a File and Rasp
Files- use to cut, shape, or smoothen wood, files have slanting parallel row of teeth (coarse have fewer teeth, Smooth file have more teeth
Rasp and Wood shaver- have deeper individual teeth
types of Utility Knives
Self- Retracting Knife- safer
Folding Utility Knife
Carpet Knife- cut with both sides
Types of Shovel
Round- dig hole in soil
Square- moves gravel, and clean construction debris
Spade- flatter and does not have a curved side, for shape trencher holes that need smooth.
types of Picks
Pick
Mattock
Explain saw teeth
the fewer teeth per inches the coarser and faster the cut will per
the more teeth per inch result in a slower but smoother cut
