Hand Flashcards
Hand Function
- important sensory organ for perception of one’s surroundings
- primary effector organ for complex motor behaviors
- helps express emotions through gesture, touch, music, and art
Articulations in the Hand
Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint
Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint
Interphalangeal (IP) joint
Proximal interphalangeal (PIP joint
Distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint
What type of joint is the thumb?
Saddle Joint
Characteristic Features of Thumb
-longitudinal diameter of articular surface of trapezium generally concave from palmar to dorsal direction
- transverse diameter on articular surface of trapezium is convex in ML direction
Kinematics
CMC has 2 degrees of freedom
abd and add occur in saggital plane
flex and ext occur in frontal plane
axis of rotation for each plane of movement passes through convex member of articulation
Arthrokinematics of CMC of thumb
Abduction: roll anterior, slide posterior
Flexion: roll and slide both medial
Extension: roll and slide both lateral
Metacarpophalangeal Joint movement
- flexion and extension in sagittal plane
- abduction and adduction in frontal plane
Arthrokinematics of MCP joints
flexion: roll and slide anterior
extension : roll and slide posterior
abduction: roll and slide lateral
Interphalangeal joints movement
flexion and extension
