Hand Flashcards
What are the bones of the proximal wrist?
From lateral to medial, there is the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, and pisiform.
What bone lies anterior to the triquetrum?
Pisiform
What are the bones of the distal wrist?
From lateral to medial, the trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate
The flexor retinaculum stretches between which bones in the wrist?
The pisiform and hamate as well as the scaphoid and trapezium
What structures go through the carpal tunnel?
Flexor pollicis longus tendon, flexor digitorum superfacialis tendon, flexor digitorum profundus tendon, and median nerve
What structures run anterior to the carpal tunnel?
Palmaris longus tendon, flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, ulnar artery and nerve
Which nerve is impacted with carpal tunnel syndrome?
Median nerve
Which structures reinforce the wrist joint?
Radial collateral ligament extends from the styloid process of the radius to the scaphoid
Ulnar collateral ligament extends from the styloid process of the ulna to the triquetrum and pisiform
What movements happen at the wrist joint?
Flexion and extension with help from the forearm
Adduction and abduction with help from the ulna and radius
The extensor retinaculum connects to what structures?
Ridges on the radius to the ulna
Which structures make up the anatomical snuffbox?
On the dorsum of the hand, there is the abductor pollicis longus, extensor pollicis brevis, and extensor pollicis longus (all thumb muscles)
Which artery lies deep to the anatomical snuffbox?
The radial artery
Distinguish between the metacarpals and phalanges
Phalanges are the digits of the fingers and have a proximal, shaft, and distal head.
The metacarpals make up the palm of the hand.
What connects metacarpals 2-5?
They are joined by deep transverse metacarpal metacarpal ligaments
Describe the compartments of the hand
Mid-palmar compartment: digital flexor tendons, nerves and arteries
Thenar: intrinsic thumb muscles
Hypothenar: intrinsic muscles for 5th finger
Interosseous: interosseous muscles and adductor pollicis
