5 imputations theories of adam’s sin on mankind
- liberal position- story is a Hebrew legend and thus has no impact at all
- pelagian position- because God imputes to a man only those sins which he personally commits, Adam’s sin affected only himself. The only impact on posterity was that of a bad example.
- Arminian Position- Adam’s sin weakened the will of his descendants to remain sinless, but did not destroy the possibility.
- Augustinian- as seminally present in Adam, all his descendants were participants with him in his sin. Thus, God holds all men guilty because all men are guilty.
- Federal- as the federal head of representative of mankind, his sin was charged not only to him but to all he represented as well. Consequences of his sin fell upon us.
threefold method of Salvation
- always by blood (must be innocent, shed, and applied)
- always through a person
- always by grace
conversion
refers to a two fold turning of the individual
a. repentance (turning from)
b. faith (turning to)
repentance
- a voluntary and sincere change in the mind of the sinner causing him to turn from his sin
- doesn’t mean reformation, remorse, or penitents
faith
- a voluntary and sincere change in the mind of the sinner, causing him to turn to the savior.
- what faith is not- a blind leap, supposition (best guess), speculation, or opinion
substitution
- vicarious atonement
2. in the OT the sheep died for the shepherd; at Calvary, the shepherd died for the sheep.
reconciliation
- accepting peace with God
2. Greek word allasso means to change- from a relationship of enmity to one of friendship
propitiation
- Christ’s death fully satisfied all the righteous demands of God toward the sinner.
- Propitiation is made necessary because of the wrath of God. He provides the solution.
