Halogens Flashcards
Trend in melting point and boiling point
Increases down the group as the molecules become larger and have more electrons. Therefore the van der Waals forces between the molecules increase so more energy is needed to break the forces
Trend In electronegativity
Decreases down the group as the atomic radii increases due to the increasing number of shells and therefore the nucleus is less able to attract the bonding pair of electrons
Oxidising strength down the group
Decreases
Fluorine
Pale yellow gas that is highly reactive
Chlorine
Greenish, reactive gas, poisonous in high concentrations
Bromine
Red liquid , that gives off brown/orange poisonous fumes
Iodine
Shiny grey solid sublimes to purple gas
What test is used to identify the presence of a halide ion?
Reaction with silver nitrate
What does Fluorides and silver nitrate produces?
No precipitate
What does Chlorides and silver nitrate produce?.
A white precipitate
What does Bromides and silver nitrate produce?
A cream precipitate
What does iodide and silver nitrate produce ?
A pale yellow precipitate
What can the silver halide precipitate be treated with if the colours are similar ?
Ammonia solution
Reducing power of halide ions down the group
Increases as the ions get bigger, it is easier for the outer electrons to be given away
What is disproportion?
Is the name given where an element simultaneously oxidises and reduces.
