Halogens Flashcards
Trend in reactivity down group?
Less reactive down group as atoms are bigger and outer electrons are more shielded. Harder to attract electrons
Trend in mp and bp?
Increase down group as there’s an increase in electron shells so increased London forces
Trend in electro negativity?
Decreases down group
What ions will Cl2 displace?
Br- ions and I- ions
What ions will Br2 displace?
I- ions
If bromide is displaced what colour will the reaction mixture be?
Orange
If iodine is displaced what colour will the reaction mixture be?
Brown
I2 + cold alkali (2NaOH) =
NaOI + NaI + h2o
3Cl2 + hot alkali (6NaOH) =
NaClO3 + 5NaCl + 3h2o
Chlorine + NaOH =
NaClO + NaCl + h2o
Trend in reducing power of halides?
Reducing power increases down the group as the ions get bigger so there’s increased shielding
F- + AgNO3 =
No ppt formed as AgF is soluble
Cl- ppt colour?
White ppt
Br- ppt colour?
Cream
I- ppt colour?
Yellow ppt
What concentration of ammonia does AgCl dissolve in?
Dilute ammonia & conc
What conc of ammonia does AgBr dissolve in?
Concentrated only.
What conc of ammonia does AgI dissolve in?
Doesn’t dissolve in ammonia
Hydrogen halides dissolve in water to produce?
Acidic gases
Hydrogen halides react with ammonia to give?
White fumes of NH4Cl / NH4Br / NH4I
