Halogen displacement reactions Flashcards
Describe half equations
They show what happens to each reactant
What can half equations be combined to make?
Ionic equations
Why do you halogens get less reactive as you go down the group?
Going down group 7 the atoms get larger. This means that the outer shell electrons are further from the nucleus. The attraction between the negatively charged electrons and positively charged nucleus gets weaker. This makes it harder to gain electrons so reactivity decreases.
What are the three halogen displacement reactions that take place?
Chlorine + potassium bromide —> potassium chloride + bromine
Chlorine+ potassium iodide —> potassium chloride + iodine
Bromine+ potassium iodide —> potassium bromide + iodine
