Group 0- noble gases Flashcards
Why is group 0, not called group 8?
Due to the fact that there is one exception, when not all electrons in the outer shell is eight (helium)
Why are group 0 elements very unreactive?
They already have a full outer shell so don’t need to gain/lose electrons
Properties of noble gases
-Monoatomic, nonmetal molecules (they exist on their own)
-Low density (they are gases) and low boiling points
-They are gases at room temperature
-weak, attractive forces
-Full outer shell, electrons, (very stable)
-Don’t come bust or readily form compounds with other elements
Boiling points, and density: trends down the group
-Boiling point increases down the group
-Intermolecular forces are getting stronger
-Density increases down the group
